Which software for color separation

Color separation is the moment where textile design meets production reality. It is the step where a beautiful image transforms into instructions a printing machine can actually execute. Yet it remains one of the most misunderstood aspects of the design process, and the software you choose to do it can make the difference between a print that sings and one that disappoints.

The foundations: what color separation software must do

At its core, color separation means converting a continuous image into discrete, printable channels. Many designers confuse this with simply dividing a file into layers inside their graphics software. But there is a crucial difference, and this confusion is the source of more printing problems than any other misunderstanding in the industry.

Layers are not channels: understanding the critical difference

This is where most designers stumble, and where most online tools disappoint. In Photoshop, you organize your work using layers. Layer 1, Layer 2, Layer 3: each one is a visual organization tool. You can turn them on and off, adjust their opacity, move them around. Layers live inside your creative workflow.

Channels are something entirely different. A channel is a single, monochrome image that will be burned onto a single screen and printed with a single ink color. If you are making a three color print, you need exactly three channels. Not three layers. Three channels. A channel for cyan ink, a channel for magenta ink, a channel for yellow ink, or whatever your actual production inks happen to be.

A designer with five design layers in Photoshop might think they have five separations ready to print. They do not. They have a file full of visual organization that means nothing to a printer. The angle at which those dots are arranged matters equally. If your halftone dots align with the weave of the fabric, the result is a visual interference pattern called moiré, a wavering effect that ruins an otherwise good print. The industry standard angle of 22.5 degrees works across almost all fabrics by breaking this visual harmony.

The shape of the dots themselves changes everything. A square dot is harsh. A round dot is predictable. An elliptical dot, an oval, gives you the smoothest transitions and the most forgiving gradations across fabric. This is why professional color separation always chooses the ellipse.

And then there is dot gain: the invisible enemy. Ink always spreads slightly into the fibers of the fabric. A 50 percent dot on your screen becomes 65 percent on the finished t-shirt. Finally, the tonal range. Details below 5 percent black are too small to survive. Above 85 percent, they become solid ink blobs. Your separations must force all gradations into this window, preserving shadow detail without drowning the image in ink.

Most online converters are raster based: they transform your vectors into pixels, re-sample them on the server, and lose the precision and crispness of your original. The output is often noisier, less refined.
